There are many animals that society has labeled as “stupid” or “pests” when they are anything but. Rats, pigeons, squirrels, and crows are four of the top ten smartest animals. So why are they known as disease agents rather than little geniuses?
1⃣ Rats have very developed senses of hearing, smell, touch—through their long whiskers—and taste. Although they have a reputation of carrying diseases, they’re less likely than dogs or cats to transmit parasites and viruses. They’re actually quite clean, spending several hours every day grooming themselves and each other. They are very social and affectionate animals, and love being in the company of their own species or humans. They take care of the injured and sick rats in their group. Because they’re so smart—they can find shortcuts, loopholes and escape routes in laboratory experiments—rats are widely used—and abused—in research.
2⃣ Pigeons can identify themselves in a mirror, be taught to perform a sequence of movements and discriminate subtle differences between two objects can recognize hundreds of images even after several years have passed— not bad for a “pest”
3⃣ Most squirrels display an impressive array of tricks and strategies that help them survive. They’ve adapted to living alongside humans, eating out of bird-feeders, flower gardens and whatever food might be lying around. They are also able to store food for leaner times, and then find their hidden morsels many months later. They may also pretend to hide food in order to confuse potential thieves, which researchers believe shows an advanced level of cunning and intellect.
4⃣ Crows living in urban areas are known to gather nuts from trees and then place them in the street for passing cars to crack open the shells. Then, after waiting patiently for the light to change, they return to the street to retrieve their nutty snack. Crows also communicate in elaborate population-specific dialects and play games and tricks on one another.
Smart little guys aren’t they? Speciesism sucks #vegansofig

You Know You Are a Vegan When…
…The most frustrating thing EVER is to hear people talking about how what you eat is a “personal choice” and “it doesn’t affect YOU so why are you talking about it.”
I don’t understand why pescetarians/vegetarians/vegans/etc get so much hate…
I mean, these are people who have given up something for the greater good
They have willingly made their life so much more difficult for a cause that will never directly benefit them
While vegan super powers would be awesome, all we do is give and give and we ask for nothing in return,
maybe a little acknowledgement of how hard we’re trying or a little support
Some of us might want to talk to you about it, because one person can’t make a difference, but one person can spread the word.
Eating meat is perfectly natural but the horrible conditions that the animals are in are not.
Some of them can talk like they are better than you, but they’d probably do that with anything: grades, work, video games, etc.
I just can’t understand why taste and convenience is prioritized so much over what is right to the point where people who go out of their way to help these animals are mocked and put down for their efforts.

here is my personal political cartoon, the thing that makes the design is the shakespeare-inspired quote. i think it really helps me to be effective in my design.
“Animals don’t have complex emotions like humans”
Pain
maternal love
curiosity
fear
Grief
Joy
So how about you use your complex emotion compassion and stop fucking eating them.

Religion has you make many sacrifices … but none quite as horrific as giving-up pork products.
I would hardly call giving up something that didn’t belong to you in the first place a “sacrifice”. You wanna talk about horrific? Try being born into this world as a pig. To their mothers, a perfect little pink baby, but to cold-hearted humans they are nothing more than a new piece of property, they do not even own their own bodies. Now THAT is a horrifying thought, being born onto this earth not owning your own body parts. On the day you are born, the farmer already knows the day you will die. To them, you are nothing more than a biological machine, a means to an end.
All baby pigs are castrated sans anesthesia near birth, that is also pretty horrific. Mother pigs are confined in gestation crates during their pregnancy to the point where they cannot even turn around, they go mad from the boredom. Now that is horrifying.
As atheists, we know that “tradition” and “false comfort/convenience” is not a justifiable excuse for our actions or the actions of others. Please, use your critical thinking and dig a little bit deeper into the world of other animals on this planet. We are all equal in that we can love, feel pain and experience joy and loss. Non-human animals do not deserve to be demonized and belittled, they deserve happiness, they deserve to live their lives free of exploitation. Go vegan today and start living your true values.
Buy some tempeh, it’s cheaper than bacon but it’s healthy and delicious. Slice it thin then marinate it in a little oil, a few drops of liquid smoke and a little maple syrup and voila! you have smokey maple tempeh bacon!

“When I see cages crammed with chickens from battery farms thrown on trucks like bundles of trash, I see, with the eyes of my soul, the Umschlagplatz [the spot in the Warsaw Ghetto where Jews were forced onto trains leaving for the death camps]. When I go to a restaurant and see people devouring meat, I feel sick. I see a holocaust on their plates.”
