There is no reason to ever allow a civilian to buy an assault rifle ever. Because it’s “in the constitution” a lot of people died today. Anyone can argue with me. Honestly, it’s because of the “right to bear arms” that a bunch of innocent people…
People deserve to have the right to bear arms. Trust me, criminals will get their hands on weapons even if they are illegal. By allowing people to purchase guns, it keeps people safer in the long run. Because now more people can have protection from the criminals. If someone in the theater had exercised their right to beat arms and had even a hand gun on them, they could have protected very body. But sadly, people having guns is frowned upon.
In Chile you have the right to have a gun, but you do not have the right to carry it around (you can have a gun in your house, but you’re not allowed to take it to the park, mall, etc). There has been just one shooting like the one in the Batman premiere. It was last year, in the underground, and two people were injured. The dude had a mental illness. How many had had the US in the last ten years?
This doesn’t have to do with the special regulations guns have (it’s actually really hard to get a gun and the permission to own one, and they are all registered), but, at least in my opinion, with cultural reasons. Chileans are not really fond on guns. US inhabitants, however, seem to love them. I really don’t think that just forbidding them would do the work, because, as you say, people will get them anyway. There are broader and deeper reasons, but making it harder to get a gun, it’ll help, and it’ll be a first step to change the way people relate to guns.
