Coexist?
It’s a nice sounding idea.
I mean, what could be wrong with wanting to live side by side with everyone of different religious faith?  No arguments.  No confrontations.  Just agreeing to live and let live, let bygones be bygones, and several other cliches.
And it WOULD be fine, except…
You see, part of the principles that guide many religions is the desire to spread the word.
And, as religions are often defined by the moralities they profess, there is a strong tendency among these religions to get these moralities encoded into laws that affect everyone.
This makes coexistence difficult, to say the least.
But even putting this aside.  Even if the respective faiths keep to themselves, there are problems.  Try a Google search on “secret prisons for teens.”
One could argue that coexistence means not interfering with the religious practices of others, and therefore we should just ignore this kind of thing.  We should let parents whose religion dictates against medical intervention with children let their children not receive proper medical care when very ill.  We should let parents repeatedly tell their children that they will go to hell if they don’t behave, to undergo fasting, to be beaten in accordance to someone’s interpretation of scripture.
To stand aside and do nothing while abuse takes place is to take the side of the abuser.  This, to me, is unacceptable.  Abuse cannot be tolerated under any circumstances, regardless of faith.
So, for your average Christian or Muslim or Mormon family down the street, odds are coexistence is probably fine.  But for too many others…?  If your religion teaches hate…if your religion teaches blatant falsehoods (creationism) to susceptible minors…if your religion condones abuse…
No, I can’t coexist with that.
